THE RUT CYCLE The shortened daylight hours of autumn trigger the animal’s biological time clock. Thyroid, Adrenal and Testicular glands, which start the sex drive, are stimulated by the amount of sunlight that is absorbed through the eyes. As daylight hours decrease in the autumn, these glands release hormones into the animals system. This causes the estrus cycle in females, and the testicles to lower and fill with semen in the male animal. Their neck also swells, antler growth stops and the velvet dries up in the male. The male animal is ready to mate 3-4 weeks before most females come in-heat. That’s why Bow-Hunters are so successful when using BUCK STOP’s® DOE-IN-HEAT® scent before the estrus period begins. SCENT – HOW IT CARRIES All of deer’s 5 senses are important to its survival, but by far the most important is its sense of SMELL. Deer’s ability to SMELL is 100 TIMES GREATER than humans. A deer will pick up scent that a human can’t detect. Deer are always monitoring the air for particles of scent. Many factors affect scent and how it travels. Most important are wind, temperature and moisture. A warm, moist, still atmosphere enhances a deer’s ability to pick up scent molecules. Both rain and falling snow carry the molecules of scent to the earth and dilute them. Light mist and heavy fog also block scent form carrying great distances. High humidity, between 50-70%, is ideal for scenting purposes and will make deer very nervous. Because more scent is carried to them, they become doubly alert. Air movements play a big role in the deer’s ability to use its sense of smell. Ideal scenting conditions, mean a humidity of 20-80%, with temperatures of 4°C to 32°C, coupled with breezes up to 20-30Km/Hr. Under these circumstances, a deer will detect danger a half-mile or more away. LURE vs SCENT What’s the difference between a LURE smell and a SCENT smell? To many outdoorsman, nothing. That’s because they have never been properly educated to the correct use of each. Smells, (for lack of a better word), fall into two categories: A LURE usually contains food or foreign ingredients. A SCENT contains the parts or by-parts of the animal it is used for.
(1) PASSION SCENTS: These aromas are a collection of urine, hormones, and pheromone secretions, and collected during the hottest 30 hours of the 36-hour estrus period that the female is in heat. Our MATE-TRIKS® Doe-In-Heat® Scent (Product #1001) is a true passion scent…we originated it in 1972 and have perfected it with the creation of our unique “HOT SCENT” formula, an odor so exact to the natural scent of the Doe-In-Heat that a buck can’t detect the difference. Others include our Moose Cow-In-Heat® #1046, Bear Sow-In-Heat® #1030, and Elk Cow-In-Heat® #1047. Ruck’n Buck® #1402 and Charge II® #1403 are not doe scents aimed at eliciting the buck’s passion to breed. They are however the strongest most effective territorial scents which bring out the only passion a dominant buck can produce which is stronger than his sex drive. One whiff of these two premium scents and the dominant buck will leave his harem immediately to put the run on the competition. Drives them crazy. Bull Elk Urine #1048 works equally as well on the big bulls. When within 20 yards of your stand, place 10-12 drops of scent on brush, tree trunk or Buck Stop's Scent Pad and circle your stand, re-applying same amounts of scent in all four directions. This method allows the scent to carry, regardless of wind direction. Next, walk to your stand and apply 10-12 drops to a nearby tree, brush or Buck Stop's Scent Pad, keeping scent at a level of 3 or 4 feet above the ground. Note that Buck Stop’s® plastic bottle with the flip-up spout easily permits this correct application; whereas wick-type dispensers do not lend themselves properly. When sitting in a tree stand, do not place scent at sitting height level. Keep the scent where it can be detected without making the buck wary. In addition, you may want to use the very successful “SCRAPE” METHOD. Find a scrape that is active. This will be a pawed-out, often muddy, smelly patch of ground about 2 feet square. It’s usually located near a deer trail or run, almost always in a small clearing and beneath overhanging branches and twigs that will be horn-battered and chewed. Buck scrapes attract Does and that’s what it’s all about. Sprinkle 10-12 drops of MATE-TRIKS® Doe-In-Heat® scent in the scrape. Put 10-12 drops on your scent pad and hunt down-wind from the scrape, preferably in a spot where you’ll have a good open shot at the scrape. (2) NATURAL SCENTS: These scents are collected from the female animal when she is not In-Heat. They must be aged and preserved at the right time to produce best results. Musks and glands are natural ingredients. Buck Stop’s GLAND-U-LURE® #1002 is classified as Natural Scents. Rub a few drops of GLAND-U-LURE® on the soles of your boots upon leaving your vehicle or better yet use the Buck Tracker Boot Pad. This will leave a natural scent trail as you walk to your stand. When sitting in a tree stand, do not place scent at sitting height level. Keep the scent where it can be detected without making the buck wary. (3) FOOD LURES: These contain juices of meats, oils of plants or roots and fruit extracts that are common to the animal’s everyday diet. In most cases, this type of formulation would be called a lure. Buck Stop’s® hunting products – Acorn, Cedar, Wild Grape, Pine and Sweet Corn can be classified in either food or natural scents because they also contain Deer Musk. (4) CURIOSITY LURES: These are odors not familiar to the animal in his native haunts. Oils of Anise, Rodium and Cumin are all called curiosity ingredients. BUCK STOP’S® NOZEE® can often trigger the curiosity of otherwise non-interested game. Deer are curious animals and a scent that is unfamiliar, if not offensive to them will cause them to investigate. They will almost always come into the scent very slowly intent on seeing the source so we recommend that you do not put our Nozee scent at your stand, but apply it to Buck Stop's Scent Pad at a distance and in an area where you can see the deer approach but the deer is not likely to be watching in your direction. Keep in that they will come in from downwind but they may circle the source of the scent. When you leave your stand or blind take the scent pad with you as you do not want the deer to satisfy his curiousity while you are not there. (5) COVER SCENTS: Scents and lures in this category sometimes
are also a food lure such as Cedar, Pine, Acorn, Sweet Corn, and Wild
Grape while very effective as lures they also help by covering our
human scent. Earth, Skunk, Rack-Koon®
and Fox are excellent scent cover
smells to which every big game animal is used to. Fox is a very good
confidence builder to the wary buck and may cause him to let his guard
down. BEST WAYS TO USE LURES & SCENTS A lure or scent, regardless of how well made, cannot be successful if used improperly. Generally speaking, Passion scents are used only during the “rut” period. Natural scents can be used at any time. Food lures work very well at all times, except during the “rut” period, when the buck’s appetite drops off by about 50%. Curiosity lures can be used during any period. Using our DOE-IN-HEAT® scent as an example: BUCK STOP® leaves a pure, natural smell, the same as a doe will leave in the outdoors, while in her estrus period. A buck deer won’t dispute this statement. That’s why our Mate-Triks® Doe-In-Heat® scent can be used at once or even next season with maximum results! It keeps indefinitely.BUCK STOP’s® new VHS video tape “HOW TO OUTSMART YOUR BUCK-10 EXPERT SCENT TACTICS” or our 36 page pocket size booklet “ OUTSMARTING THE WHITETAIL” will help the new hunter and seasoned outdoorsman alike to understand better how to use our products in a proper way to help produce results.
